One of Britain's biggest newspapers has been telling readers Iceland is hot in July since 2023. It averages 11°C. We checked what's actually out there.
The same old names, on repeat, for years
Google's own search results for "where is hot in july" are dominated by tour operators, each pushing their own 6 to 10 destinations (their own inventory, not the weather). Strip the duplicates and the honest total across all 9 results is just 46 names, with Dubai alone in 6 of them. Google's AI Overview doesn't add anything new either. It just summarises whichever of those made the top.
And it isn't only biased, it's sometimes just wrong: The Times's "Where is hot in July?" has sat unchanged since 5 June 2023, still filing Iceland (11°C), Lithuania (17°C), British Columbia (17°C), Stockholm (18°C) and County Kilkenny (16°C) under "hot", and nobody's fact-checked it since. Its own small print explains a lot: the piece is monetised through affiliate links to "a specially selected list of trusted operators", the same incentive as the tour operators above, just dressed up as journalism.
The public has been fed the same self-serving, recycled, inaccurate shortlist for years. It's time someone showed them how many places are genuinely hot, properly checked, every month of the year, short-haul, medium-haul and long-haul.
What's actually hot right now
In August, 626 destinations in our dataset of 800+ real places average 25°C or above. Every one of them is a genuine holiday destination with at least one four-star hotel, not a gimmick pick.
Full source-by-source audit conducted 24 July 2026, based on UK Google search results for "where is hot in july" at that time. That's a point-in-time finding, since it depends on a third party's current output, and we re-run it periodically. Every figure on this page marked live is recalculated straight from our own dataset.
